Mood Board Presentation for Great Expectations

My Mood Board for our first lesson of the term to explore my ideas for Miss Havisham and the backstory of Great Expectations.
Notes for presenting
  • Great Expectations by Charles Dickens was written in 1861 and set in the early 1800's.
  • It is the coming-of-age story of Pip, an English orphan who rises to surprising wealth and experiences tragic heartbreak as a result of my chosen character, Miss Havisham.
  • The story is told over various locations. The key areas are the marshes around Kent where Pip grew up, London as Pip rose to gentlemanhood and Miss Havisham's Satis House where Pip & Estella meet.
  • Estella is Pip's love interest for his life from childhood. She is the adopted child of Miss Havisham. Pip is the narrator of the story. Joe Gargery becomes one of Pip's guardians after marrying his sister. Abel Magwitch harrasses Pip as a young boy after escaping prison, however, becomes his benefactor secretly and leads him to the life of riches.
  • Early on, it is arranged for Pip to meet a rich, reclusive woman - Miss Havisham. He meets her in her iconic estate that holds her nightmare memories of being abondoned on her wedding day resulting her wearing her old wedding gown and one white shoe for the rest of her life. She raises her daughter to exact revenge on men resulting in the dysfunctional and ultimately heartbreaking relationship of Pip and Estella.
  • I have chosen Miss Havisham to study as, for me, she is an extremely interesting and deceptive character. Even it is told she is around 50, she is described to be a combination of skeleton and waxwork. Her heartbreak will be an interesting aspect to look into as it changes and influences her whole aesthetic. It'll also be good to explore her social status and wealth, as well as her attempt of redemption ending in her firey death. A makeup design interpretation of these life events and how they would affect someone will be thought provoking process for me to explore this term.
